Brothers, if you are a father, stepfather or grandfather raising your grandchildren, you have an incredibly important role to play in raising your children to maturity. We must not fail to teach our children and bring them to maturity. At the heart of maturity is knowing how to properly relate to God and others. This wisdom that Solomon passed on to his son is the same wisdom we need to pass on to our children. On this Father's Day, Proverbs 3:1-12 is an encouragement that wise fathers can raise mature children by teaching them how to relate to God and others.

In the Garden, God began to paint a picture of a man who would one day deliver humanity from the consequences of the Fall. This man came to be known as Messiah, the anointed one. The picture drawn by the Old Testament Jewish prophets clearly depicted Messiah as a king and not just a king over Israel, but over the whole world. Yet there were other pictures depicting the Messiah suffering and dying. Jewish scholars couldn’t put it together. Was the promised Messiah a victorious king or a suffering servant? For the Jews it was "either/or". When they looked at the prophetic picture of Messiah all they saw was a great king. This is a major reason why the Jews rejected Jesus at His first coming - He didn’t fit their picture of the Messiah.

Steve's sermon last week on the priesthood of every believer reinforced my decision to lead in worship next Sunday, Christmas Day. Steve pointed out that there is no formal priesthood in the New Testament Church because every one of us is a priest under the New Covenant. The Apostle Peter revealed this revolutionary truth to Jews scattered throughout the Roman Empire who had been raised under the Old Covenant priesthood.

Recently I came across an article in which a person claimed the United States was born out of rebellion. The implication being that the beginning of our nation was somehow less than honorable. But nothing could be further from the truth. In studying both history and our founding documents, we discover that our founding fathers were men of principle and spiritual conviction.

The Declaration of Independence is the founding document of the American political tradition. It articulates the fundamental ideas that form the American nation: All men are created free and equal and possess the same inherent, natural rights. Legitimate governments must therefore be based on the consent of the governed and must exist "to secure these rights."

Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit King Solomon wrote words of wisdom to his children. Preserved in Scripture, these words guide all us fathers as to important truths about which we should be talking with our children.

One of the most important moments of a wedding ceremony takes place when I ask the father of the bride, "Who gives this woman to be married to this man?" In that moment, he publicly relinquishes authority over his daughter and entrusts her to the authority of her husband. If a father cherishes his daughter he will not do this lightly. He will have verified long before the wedding day that the young man is worthy and capable. He must; the well-being of his daughter is at stake.

Similarly, Jesus is concerned that those who are in authority over His Bride, the Church, be worthy and capable. That is why He has given clear qualifications for those who would serve as Elders of the Church.

How a man talks reveals the condition of his soul. A wise person, according to Jewish thought, is one who skillfully applies God's truth to everyday life. We need church leaders who can help us apply God's Word to our everyday circumstances. The term understanding refers to a person who has expert knowledge in a particular subject. We need church leaders who have expert knowledge in Christian living.

The wise leader is pure. He is peaceable. He is gentle; noncombative. He is open to reason. He is full of mercy and good fruits. He is sensitive to the needs of others and quick to meet those needs when he is able. He is impartial. He is genuine.

You are shaping the lives of human beings made in the image of God. They, in turn, are or will affect the lives of dozens, maybe hundreds, maybe thousands of people. You have the awesome opportunity and responsibility to help your children to know the love of God in Jesus Christ and to live for Jesus.

We have several examples of the influence of godly mothers. Last week we read from the Apostle Paul's letter to Timothy where Paul made mention of Timothy's mother and grandmother. After greeting Timothy, Paul wrote:

"I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." - 2 Timothy 1:3–7 (ESV)

Why is it that on the Sunday mornings we take a tiny piece of bread and a tiny cup of juice we call it the Lord’s Supper? It’s not even a snack much less a supper!

But from the beginning the Lord’s Supper was a supper. Jesus was eating the Passover meal with His disciples when He broke the bread and gave the cup to His disciples (Matt. 26:17-29; Mark 14:12-25; Luke 22:7-23). The early church celebrated the Lord's Supper as a shared meal (Acts 2:42, 46; 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:20-22, 33-34). In fact, 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 indicates that the Lord’s Supper was celebrated weekly by the entire church family as a part of the meeting of the church.

From 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 I want to make a case for re-establishing the Lord’s Supper as a shared meal here at Grace Church. As I will explain later, this will not replace but supplement our Sunday morning observance of the Lord’s Supper.

As we turn to 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 we realize quickly that it is a stern corrective for abuses that were taking place at the Lord’s Supper meal in Corinth. In fact, Paul reveals that these abuses were the reason the Lord had disciplined church members with both sickness and premature death (11:30)! The value Jesus places on the Lord’s Supper is a compelling reason for us to restore it to a shared meal.

Paul confronts two problems. First, the union of believers one with another was being violated.

Resurrection Sunday could also be called Exaltation Sunday; it was on Resurrection Sunday that Jesus was exalted, crowned King and appointed High Priest (Heb. 1:3-9, 13, 5:5-6). Once appointed High Priest, Jesus entered the Holy of Holies in the Heavenly Tabernacle and offered His blood as the once for all sacrifice for sins. Jesus ascended on Resurrection Sunday in order to complete His work of salvation.

Jesus is and will forever be the most unique person in all reality. We struggle to comprehend Him. Our struggle is reflected in heresies about Jesus that developed early in the history of the church and even now exist in the cults.

As we prepare our hearts to remember Jesus through the bread and cup, we’re going to discover that as Jesus celebrated the final Passover of His first coming, He was thinking about the first Passover of His second coming!
In the Law of Moses, God established seven annual feasts to be observed by the nation of Israel.  The Feast of Passover commemorates God’s deliverance of the Israelites from physical death on the night of Passover through the blood sacrifice of the passover lamb.

As thousands of Jewish families gathered at the Passover meal and looked back at God’s deliverance Jesus gathered with His disciples for the Passover meal and looked forward to Passover’s ultimate fulfillment in the Millennial Kingdom. Read Luke 22:14-20.

This morning, it is our joy to commission two of our brothers to the office of Deacon. In preparation we will study the origin of and the qualifications for the office of Deacon. Please turn in your Bibles to Acts 6:1-6 where is recorded the beginning of the office of deacon.

THE NEED FOR DEACONS (ACTS 6:1-6)

The church in Jerusalem had grown considerably since the Feast of Pentecost 33A.D. at which time 3000 Jews came to faith in Jesus and were baptized (Acts 2:40-41). Apparently, many who had visited Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost and were converted settled in Jerusalem to grow in their new-found faith in Christ.  This influx of Greek-speaking Jews (Hellenists) required the native Hebrew-speaking Jews to temporarily pool their resources to meet their brethren's needs (Acts 4:32). Among those dependent upon the charitable giving of the church were widows who were served food on a daily basis. A problem arose when the Greek-speaking Jews (Hellenists) felt their widows were being neglected in favor of the native Jews.

We are called to love; the first and second commands teach us to love God and others. Can anyone disagree that these should be the two greatest commands? It's the doing that's tough; particularly loving others. Even for those who have made progress dying to self and living to Christ, loving others is challenging; it's not always clear how to love certain people in certain situations. We find ourselves asking, "What does love look like in this situation?" It's the right question and needs to be asked far more often than it is. We're really asking for discernment. This is exactly what God wants us to ask and what the Apostle Paul prayed for on behalf of the church at Philippi. God wants to make us better lovers.

Today we're going to look at how we as believers are to relate to unbelievers and how to make an effective impact in their lives so as to bring them into the Body of Christ. Now notice I said make an "effective impact". This is hard work that takes intentionality. Christ Himself lived daily with intentionality. He lived each day with a plan for what He was going to accomplish through His life. In our fast paced society it is extremely easy to lose sight of that. So let me ask you today, why did you get up this morning? "Because I had to" leaves us with a sense of aimlessness and complacency. Well the same is true when it comes to sharing our faith in Jesus Christ. So, today we are going to look at how the Apostle Paul intentionally shared Jesus with a group of people and what lessons we can glean from that that will help us intentionally and effectively share Christ.

It's not a matter of "if" we will face trials, it is a matter of "when" we will face them and "how" we will handle them! Jesus said, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33). We will have trials and troubles, but God is bigger! This means that our trials can be turned into triumphs! So the answer as to whether your trials will turn into triumphs or defeat lie in your response to the trials that come your way.
