A brilliant medical doctor discovered the use of blood plasma that resulted in saving thousands of lives in World War II, Korea, and the Vietnam War. At Pearl Harbor, for example, 96% of those who received plasma, survived. After World War II Charles Drew was named director of the National Blood Bank Program, and devoted himself to teaching doctors at Howard University Medical School. On April 1, 1950, while driving some young doctors to a conference he was involved in an automobile accident in Burlington, N.C. He was rushed to a hospital where his life could have been saved by plasma. But Dr. Drew was denied admission to the hospital because his skin was black. He died on the way to another hospital 26 miles away.

The church is also riddled with prejudice and favoritism that causes many divisions which have become extremely unappealing to the world and we must be careful to not allow them to rear their ugly head. Some of those prejudices and favoritisms include: The young looking down on the elderly and vice versa, Doctrinal divisions over nonessentials (Predestination vs. free-will), and Divisions over music preference.

Revelation chapters 12 & 13 reveal the darkest time in human history. Satan (the dragon) cast down to earth will vent his rage against Israel through the Antichrist (beast out of the sea) and the False Prophet (beast out of the earth). Rising to world power, the Antichrist will crush mankind under the heel of his totalitarian regime. Freedom of conscience and freedom of religion will be persecuted under the False Prophet's campaign to replace all religions with the worship of the Antichrist. Dissent will not be tolerated. Those refusing to worship the image of the Antichrist will be executed. Those refusing to take the mark of the Antichrist will be denied access to basic necessities. Millions the world over will die.It will be the darkest, most brutal period in human history.

Against the dark backdrop of Revelation 13, Revelation chapter 14 shines a ray of hope. All will not be lost. The unholy trinity will not win. The Lamb will stand on Mt. Zion with His redeemed!

The vision given the Apostle John in Revelation 14:1-5 was given as a direct contrast to Revelation 13. The vision is of the future. It is a vision of the Millennial Kingdom. The purpose of this vision is to encourage believers that as terrible as the last 3 1/2 years of the Tribulation will be it will not last; Jesus and His saints will triumph.

As we read Revelation 14:1-5 keep in mind the dark days of the Antichrist's regime revealed in chapter 13.

Charles Spurgeon once told of sitting in a nice restaurant. As he ate he kept noticing a rather angry looking man across the dining room who scowled at him every time he looked his way. Finally Spurgeon decided to go over and speak to the man to see what his problem was. However, as he stood he realized that what he had been seeing was his own reflection in mirrors that lined the walls across the room. We may not always like what we see in the mirror of God's Word but what we see there is always the truth.

At least once each day, and probably several times, we stand before a mirror and review the way we look. If an adjustment is necessary, and it usually is, then we straighten our clothes or comb our hair all because the mirror has helped us by revealing things about how we really look. The word of God is a moral mirror which the Holy Spirit uses to enable us to see ourselves as we really are. The view we get is not what we think based on experience or what others think based on their observations, it is how God sees us. But the problem is that many people today don’t read or understand the Bible. This is not because they don't have a Bible. The Bible is present in almost every home in America. The problem is that it is not read and applied.

Revelation 12 revealed that midway through the Tribulation Satan will be cast to the earth. Knowing his time is short; Satan will work through the Antichrist and the False Prophet to receive the worship he craves. This is the theme of Revelation 13.
Revelation 13:1–2 (ESV) 1 And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. 2 And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. And to  it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. This beast that rises from the sea is the Antichrist. The meaning of the symbols used to describe the Antichrist have been explained in previous sermons available on both our church website and smartphone app.

Temptation cannot be avoided, but it can be defeated. You don’t have to give in to the temptations and schemes of the devil. Here in James 1:13-18 we will see that James gives us 3 facts we need to consider if we are to defeat temptation and live in Christlike victory. You will see from looking at the passage right before it that James connects trials and temptations. The reason is simple: If we are not careful the trials on the outside can become temptations on the inside.

In our previous study we were thinking about this long period of time in human history called the Times of the Gentiles. Please reference the Times of the Gentiles chart on page two of your notes. The Times of the Gentiles stretches from 586 B.C. to the end of the Tribulation. Daniel 2 and Daniel 7 reveal that from God’s prophetic perspective, four Gentile empires dominate Jerusalem over the course of the Times of the Gentiles.

We discovered that the first three Gentile empires - the Babylonian, Medo-Persian and Hellenistic – were represented symbolically by animals – a lion, bear and leopard. The fourth Gentile empire, however, is so powerful and brutal, it is described as a beast that crushes. The fourth Gentile empire began with the Roman empire. The Roman empire came to an end but the fourth Gentile empire has not. The Roman empire was a stage of the fourth Gentile empire but is not the totality of the fourth Gentile empire. The fourth Gentile empire and the Roman empire are not one in the same. The fourth Gentile empire which began with the Roman empire continues to dominate Jerusalem until the end of the Tribulation.

So what is this fourth Gentile empire that began with the Roman empire but extends beyond it?

It's not a matter of "if" we will face trials, it is a matter of "when" we will face them and "how" we will handle them! Jesus said, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33). We will have trials and troubles, but God is bigger! This means that our trials can be turned into triumphs! So the answer as to whether your trials will turn into triumphs or defeat lie in your response to the trials that come your way.

Midway through the 7 year Tribulation persecution will break out against the Jewish people on a scale unequalled in human history. Revelation 12 reveals the reasons: 1) Satan hates Israel because it is the source of the Messiah (12:1-6), 2) Satan will be defeated by Michael the Archangel and cast down to earth for the final 3 1/2 years of the Tribulation (12:7-12) and 3) Satan will attempt to annihilate the Jews but God will protect a Remnant in the Wilderness (12:13-17). The final words of Revelation 12 set us up for chapter 13: Revelation 12:17 (ESV) 17 …And he (the dragon) stood on the sand of the sea.

Picture Satan standing on the seashore furious and filled with rage. He knows his time is short – only 3 1/2 years before the 2nd coming. He's been defeated by Michael the Archangel. He no longer has access to the presence of God.  He can't attack Jesus directly so he will vent his rage on Jesus' people, the Jews. He still craves to be worshipped by mankind.

Beginning a study through a book of the Bible can be a lot like going on a trip: It is good to know where you are going and what you expect to see when you get there. When my wife and I went to Yosemite for our 1 year anniversary in 2002 we spent many hours looking up the different sights we would see, where they would be located, and what we would do once we got to there. So what we will do is start off answering 4 important questions that will tell us where we are going in James and what we can expect through our study of it. Our 4 big questions will be... 1. Who was James? 2. Who did James write to? 3. Why did James write? 4. How can we get the most out of James?
