As we continue the story of Yeshua: Messiah King we find Jesus still in Jerusalem celebrating the feast of Passover. A prominent Rabbi initiates an evening meeting with Jesus. Little did he know that this man from Nazareth was about to rock his world.

There are evils in this world that should make us angry and spur us to action. If they don’t make us angry, something is wrong with us. As we continue the story of Yeshua, Messiah King, Jesus encounters a situation that has angered Him for twenty years but up until this moment He has not been at liberty to do anything about it. But this time it’s different.

"If mom says no, I’ll go ask dad." This timeless phrase has been used and practiced by children throughout the ages! No doubt many of us have either been on the using or receiving end. What kids seem to understand at such an early age, is that sometimes, mom and dad have a different plan for what they want their kids to do. We will see this play out in a very unique and interesting way in our bible passage today. We will see that Mary, the mother of Jesus, has a specific appeal for Jesus, part of which went against Jesus’ Father’s plan for Him. Jesus was in a somewhat difficult spot but managed to satisfy both His Father’s plan and Mother’s appeal in the perfect way.

In our section today we will see Jesus begins collecting his disciples in preparation for his Messianic ministry. We will see each disciple who ends up with Jesus, does so in a unique way and has a singularly unique story about their first couple days with this Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. However, despite the variety of invitations, the heart of what they have been invited into is all the same. They are to "come and see." To be partakers in what this Jesus is doing.

In the 1st century, where proper documentation was far more difficult to obtain, the role of a witness played an important part in society. In our passage today, we will see John the Baptizer provide testimony both about who he is, and far more importantly, about who Jesus is.

God sent Jesus to be king over God’s creation. But will Jesus, like Satan and Adam before Him, grow proud and rebellious? After His baptism, the Spirit immediately led Jesus into the Wilderness to be tested in order to answer this question: is Jesus worthy of God’s trust? We must not blunt the intensity of this experience nor devalue its significance. In His earthly life, Jesus never drew upon His deity. If He had, He would have disqualified Himself as our Substitute and empathetic High Priest.

As a young adult, John spent many years isolated in the Judean Wilderness away from the influences of rabbinic Judaism and Sanhedrin politics. In 26 A.D. God called John out of the wilderness to begin his work of preparing the people to receive the Messiah and ultimately identifying the Messiah to the nation of Israel. On the occasion of Jesus' baptism, John received supernatural assistance in identifying the Messiah.

It's hard to live today in light of something so far in the future. Be that as it may, we're called to live our lives in light of the future Millennial Kingdom knowing that how we serve Jesus now will determine how we will serve Jesus then. This, too, was John the Baptist's challenge to his fellow Israelites. They needed to return to God and live their lives in light of the future.

Many of us are familiar with today’s story: 12-year-old Jesus spent three days in the Temple astonishing Jewish theologians while Mary & Joseph frantically searched for him. How was it that Jesus was so smart? How did he know the Hebrew Scriptures so well he could converse and even challenge the chief rabbis of Israel?

Joseph and Mary had just been visited by Magi from the east. These Babaloyan scholars, or wise men, had traveled to see the King of the Jews. Joseph must have thought, "Now this is the way that it should be." His young family was settling into life in the small town of Bethlehem. Their world was becoming normal. This must have been more like what they expected.

That nativity set is very special to me as I’m sure your nativity set is special to you. My purpose is not to bash nativity sets. But to be honest, they’re not historically accurate. First, archeology indicates that in first century Israel, animals were sheltered either in caves or on the ground floor of human dwellings. Barns or stables in first century Israel were probably unknown. Indications are that Jesus was born in a cave.

As we look into our passage today, we will see, that although there is a number of promises and blessings regarding what this Yeshua will be and do, there are also some hard truths about him, both for Jews and Gentiles, as well as for his mother Mary.

Palaces, royal heralds, trumpets, crowds, feasts, gifts and a massive celebration. That is what one would expect for the birth of a king. We have recently studied the birth and early days of John the Baptizer (Luke 1:5-24; 39-80) and we saw an Angel, a priest, miracles, prophecies, and crowds of people leaving the event thinking of these things, saying in expectation and excitement “What will this child be?”.

Undoubtedly baby John, born to his parents in their old age, touched something deep in Zechariah & Elizabeth. I imagine their wrinkled faces wet with tears as they cradled their newborn son for the first time. Great must have been Zechariah’s regret over his unbelief unable as he was to whisper and coo over his son. He must have wondered when God was going to lift his punishment.

God delights in using people who, in the eyes of the world, are nothings. God chose a “nothing” named David, a shepherd boy little valued by his own father, and raised him up to be the greatest king in the history of Israel.

The King Who Has Always Been There
In this sermon, I will be referring to Jesus as Yeshua. Yeshua is Jesus' name in Hebrew. It means "God saves." Referring to Jesus by His Hebrew name will hopefully reinforce the fact that Jesus is a Jew and that He came to the Jews and taught and ministered in a thoroughly Jewish context.

There are a lot of things said and done in the Bible that don’t make sense to us. There are many reasons for this. The Bible was written over a period of 1600 years beginning in about 1500BC. Its final book was finished about 100AD. We’re separated from the Bible by 2000 years of history.

Key Truth: Death is the beginning of a fantastic adventure for the Christian. If we can’t picture the future, how can we face it with joy and hope? God wants us to face our future with joy and hope. He has revealed much about the afterlife, enough to make us realize that death for a believer is the beginning of a fantastic adventure. Let’s think about the future God has for us.
