For the last 11 chapters Paul has explained very deep and profound theological truths about humanity, sin, God the Father, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Justification, Sanctification and so much more! In chapter 12, Paul takes a new direction with his teaching. He transitions from what we should believe to how we should behave. Though they are different in their thrust, the behavior Paul is going to be prescribing for believers is inseparable from the foundation build in the previous 11 chapters.

Romans 10 concludes by teaching that God is taking the Gospel directly to the Gentiles because of Israel’s stubborn unbelief. Naturally, some conclude that God is done with Israel. Paul opens Romans 11 with an emphatic declaration that God has not rejected Israel.

Israel remains hardened in her rejection of Jesus. God has promised that one day all Israel will be saved. But over the last two thousand years, the vast majority of Jews have rejected Jesus and will remain separated from God for eternity. In every generation a few Jews have believed, but even when the entire nation is saved, it will be but a remnant.

In our study of God’s Word we encounter truths that seem to contradict one another. We call these antinomies. An antinomy is two things that are both true, but they appear to contradict each other. The most common antinomy is the Trinity. The Bible reveals that God is one. The Bible reveals that God is three. All attempts to illustrate or explain the Trinity fall apart because the Trinity is incomprehensible to the human mind.

This morning we'll look at the big picture of what God is doing today with the nation of Israel. Then, in the next couple weeks we’ll look at the details of God’s plan for Israel. Romans 9-11 deals with God's relationship with the nation of Israel. God made four unconditional covenants with Israel promising her the Land (Gen. 12:7; 15:17-20; Deut. 29:1-30:10), the Seed (Gen. 3:15; 17:1-21; 2 Sam. 7:9-17) and the Blessing (Gen. 12:1-3; Jer. 31:31-37; Ezek. 36). In addition, God promised a Messiah-King Who will deliver the nation of Israel from her sin and reign over her and the gentile nations in righteousness (Isa. 11; 12; 53; Dan. 7:13-14; Zech. 9:9-10; 12; 13).

This question surfaces because in Paul's day, the majority of Jews rejected Jesus as Messiah. Lead by their spiritual leaders, the Jews rejected Jesus' messianic claims and with the help of Rome, killed Jesus. Jesus rose from the dead and ascended to heaven. Rather than receiving the promised kingdom ruled by Messiah, the nation of Israel remained subjugated to Rome. By 70AD Israel ceased to exist as a nation.

Though we deny God, He loves us so much He sacrificed Jesus to pay the penalty of our sin and deliver us from His righteous wrath. God loves us so much that after He justifies us His Spirit imparts new life setting us free from our old lives of sin and death. And if that weren't enough to prove how much God loves you, God promises to complete our salvation by giving us new bodies and a future with Jesus that will never end. All the evidence of God’s love and commitment to you has been manifest. God loves you. Of this there can be no doubt. But do you love Him? That’s the question. Are you ready to commit yourself to Him? We're at a point of decision.

If you are a Christian, your life is under reconstruction. You’re under new management. God is remodeling your life from the inside out. Your old life was based on a blueprint called the “mindset of the flesh” (Rom. 8:6). The "fleshly mindset" is a life driven by the body.

As we open our Bibles to Romans 8:18-25 we are in that portion of Paul’s letter dealing with the second aspect of our salvation - sanctification. Sanctification is the lifelong process of spiritual transformation in which God is healing our brains, setting us free from self-centeredness and fear and changing our character all to the end of making us more and more like Jesus Himself. The process of sanctification is difficult. We want to live for God and obey Him, but self-centeredness and fear sabotage our godly desires.

In chapters 5-8 Paul deals with sanctification. Sanctification is the second aspect of salvation. It is the lifelong process of being delivered from the power of sin. The goal of sanctification is that we increasingly become like Jesus (8:29). Sanctification is the lifelong process of healing our brains and being set free from fear and self-centeredness.

The process of sanctification is also the process by which we enter more deeply into the life of God. As we read Romans 8:1-13, notice how many times the Holy Spirit is connected with life. If we really want to be fully alive we must realign our life purpose and pursuits on the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brings life to all those who set their minds on His will.

In chapter 7 Paul teaches that God's law cannot sanctify us. 7:7-12 affirms that God's law is not the problem. Sin is the problem. God's law is holy, righteous and good. The problem is that sin is aroused by God's law. Rather than subduing sin, God's law actually stirs it up. Sin sabotages the good purposes of the law. In 7:13-25 Paul demonstrates through his own life experience that believers cannot fulfill the righteous requirements of God's law by their effort alone.

In Romans 7 Paul teaches us that the Law, by itself, cannot transform us into the likeness of Christ. But, even though that is the case, the Law is not the problem. God’s Law is holy, righteous and good. The real problem is the treacherous nature of sin that still resides in us. As we come to Romans 7:7-12 keep in mind Paul is dealing with sanctification. He is answering the question, "What is the process by which our lives are transformed to become like Jesus?"

In Romans 7:1-6, Paul’s main point is that the law does not have the power make us right with God, and it also does not have the power to make us more like Jesus. As Christians, we will not bear spiritual fruit by striving to following the law. It is through our union with Christ, having died to the law, that we are now free to bear fruit for God in the Spirit.

Though the Apostle Paul did not know about neuroplasticity, he did understand its practical outworking: whatever we give our minds and bodies to eventually controls us. As we’ve just seen, whatever we think about over and over again strengthens the neural pathways involved with that thought process. Whatever we do repeatedly with our bodies eventually controls us for good or for ill. What we will discover in Romans 6:15-23 is that neuroplasticity or rather its practical outworking is one of the reasons why Christians should not continue in a sinful lifestyle.

As we come to Romans 6, Paul will say repeatedly in a variety of ways that in Christ we died to sin. Paul stresses this because it is crucial to the process of our sanctification. Yet it's difficult to understand because we don’t feel very dead to sin! In fact, most of us rarely feel kind of faint! God’s salvation plan includes both delivering us from the penalty of sin and delivering us from the practice of sin. Deliverance from the penalty of sin we call justification. Deliverance from the practice of sin we call sanctification.

Since chapter one of Romans we have been focused on justification. When a sinner trusts in the blood of Jesus to pay the penalty of their sins, God declares that sinner righteous. But like adoption, justification is not the end of God's saving us; it's just the beginning. Justification opens the way to a whole new life.

Our words often imply that people in the Old Testament were saved by the Law. We say people in the Old Testament were "under the Law," but we are "under grace." It is easy to see how we can misunderstand. God's means of salvation has always been by faith. Justification by faith is not a New Testament thing. This is the message of Romans 3:27-4:25.

In Romans 1:18 - 3:20 Paul shows that we are all sinners under God’s wrath. None is righteous, no, not one. No one does good. He further shows we cannot improve our condition; for by works of the law no human being will be declared righteous in his sight. Paul has driven us to the edge of the cliff. There is nothing we can do. We cannot make ourselves right with God. Left to ourselves we are hopeless. The glorious message of the Gospel is that God has made a way for us to be right with Him. But in making us right with Himself God does something very peculiar.

In 2008 we were rocked. Cancer. Stage 4. Aggressive. At first we were numb. We weren’t angry. God’s Word trained us to know we all fall into trials of various kinds. I hurt for the pain Cathy would suffer. But we accepted the diagnosis. Rejecting the diagnosis would have signed Cathy’s death warrant. Accepting the diagnosis was the first step towards her healing. In our passage today God delivers a devastating diagnosis. The question is, will we accept it or reject it?

Our passage today takes us deeper into the Jewish mind and its reasons for rejecting the Gospel. Unbelieving Jews have already been condemned by Paul in chapters 1 and 2. Paul taught that all humanity is under God’s wrath because of our refusal to acknowledge the evidence of God's "eternal power and divine nature," that is clearly seen through His creation. God's present wrath is expressed in that God gave humanity over to various forms of sin (1:18-32).

Are you pecksniffian? You really don’t want to be pecksniffian but if you are you probably don’t see it. People around you know if you’re pecksniffian. It’s unpleasant to say the least. Religious people are very susceptible to it. It was a deep seated problem in Judaism. It’s understandable why the Jews struggled with pecksniffianism given their special relationship with God:

When our children were little and we were out in public, they would wander. Despite our instructions to stay with us, they would wander off. A few times I just let them; I could always see them, but they couldn’t see me. They thought it was great; they didn’t realize I was disciplining them by letting them wander off. They were having a great time free to go wherever they pleased until after a little while it dawned on them they were alone, they couldn’t see us, they didn’t know how to find us…

I was trying to remember the first time I shared the Gospel. In 1976, Campus Crusade for Christ launched a nationwide evangelistic campaign called “I Found It”. I was a high school sophomore. The campaign included telephone evangelism. I remember several evenings at the church calling through our local telephone directory and sharing the gospel with those willing to listen. I vividly remember how nervous I felt; my heart was racing and my mouth was completely dry I could hardly speak. Truth be told, each time I dialed I hoped nobody would pick up!

Many years ago a young man completed our youth pastor internship and began searching for a youth pastor position. We were shocked to encounter churches that offered to hire him on the first phone call sight unseen. He was offered jobs without submitting a resume, a statement of faith or references. How would you feel if we did this here at Grace? How would you feel if we hired a youth pastor after one phone call? Moms and Dads, how would you feel sending your junior high and high school students to be taught by a young man we knew nothing about?

The book of Romans is one of the most powerful and influential books ever written. Augustine, one of the most brilliant theologians of the early church, came to faith after reading Romans chapter thirteen. Martin Luther recovered the doctrine of salvation by faith from his study of Romans 1:17 and went on to lead the Protestant Reformation. While listening to the preface of Luther’s commentary on Romans, John Wesley felt his heart "strangely warmed" and he was saved. John Wesley and his brother Charles were used mightily by God in both England and the United States to bring revival in the eighteenth century. The great Puritan preacher, John Bunyan, was so inspired by Romans that he wrote the immortal Pilgrim’s Progress.

Our horizon includes the Rapture, the Kingdom, the Crushing of Satan and, as we will study today, Paradise Restored. The horizon for people separated from God is, however, horribly different. Many people in our society believe there will be some type of judgment in the afterlife. Mistakenly, they believe this judgment will determine who goes to heaven and who goes to hell. The Bible reveals three judgments none of which determine who goes to heaven and who goes to hell. One’s eternal destiny is determined in this life by one's response to Jesus Christ.

Jesus will fulfill His promises through an event called the Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). At the Rapture, the souls of deceased believers will be united with their resurrection bodies. Believers alive at the time of the Rapture will be changed and then caught up to meet the Lord after the resurrection of deceased believers. We don’t know the day or hour of the Rapture. But we do know it happens before Jesus returns.

Now that Judas is out of the room and into the night, Jesus concludes the last Passover feast in a very intimate way. Speaking dearly to the eleven, He institutes a new type of remembrance. Jesus picks up a cup of wine and some bread. This cup is the third cup of wine that is drunk during the Passover meal. It comes after the main course. It is called The Cup of Redemption. In the Jewish Passover it was symbolic of the blood of the lamb that was sacrificed at the first Passover in Egypt.

Last week we ended with Jesus and his disciples in the town of Bethany. Jesus had just called out a dead man from his grave. The countryside was ablaze with the news, and since Bethany is less than two miles from Jerusalem, the leaders of Israel heard the news quickly. Throughout the last few years, Jesus had not only claimed to be God, but had systematically demonstrated control and authority over all areas of life. It was an authority and control that only God could possess. Wind and waves recognized His voice. Demons trembled in fear and followed His instruction. He healed sickness and disease as simply as if he were ordering food from a restaurant. Lazarus was the final straw. Bringing a man back to life, Jesus had control over life itself.
