The first book of the New Testament, the Gospel of Matthew, begins with Jesus’ genealogy. Matthew’s theme is Jesus, the Messiah-King. Matthew quotes the Old Testament over 60 times. He shows that Jesus fulfills the OT prophecies concerning the first coming of the Messiah-King.

Paul moves from telling the Roman brothers and sisters his hopes and plans to come see them, (15:22-33) to greeting an incredible list of people, including 26 individuals, 2 “families” and 3 “house churches”. Paul hasn’t been to Rome, but we see that he knows a number of people he has either heard about, or that he has met during his ministry, that he believes have now traveled to Rome. There are a couple things that stand out in this section.

Paul closes out the theological teaching of Romans by reminding and encouraging the believers to welcome and accept one another. Much of this letter has dealt with the differences between Gentiles and Jews, and he has just spent a considerable amount of time dealing with differences in convictions between “weaker and stronger” brothers.
