Sermon Archive

Last week we learned how to be wise with our words and how to practically apply that to our lives by becoming familiar with James and Proverbs, by thinking before speaking, by talking less, by encouraging more, and by really focusing on what has been influencing our minds. The reason I wanted to begin by focusing on how we’re living the sermons is because that’s one of the main themes that Pastor James is teaching us in his letter. If we say we believe it, we better behave accordingly. Read James 3:13-18.

Jesus taught a number of parables revealing the nature of the Kingdom between His first and second comings. The Parable of the Weeds is one such parable. The Parable of the Weeds follows the Parable of the Soils which explained why the good seed Jesus had sown had not taken root; it was because of the rocky soil that characterized the hearts of Israel's spiritual leaders. But there was another power at work as well which is the subject of the Parable of the Weeds.

In Matthew 13:24-30 Jesus gives the parable. The Greek noun translated "weeds" (zizania, used only here in the N.T.) refers to a plant similar in appearance to wheat which does not produce any grain. Before the genuine wheat produces grain, it is virtually impossible to tell the difference. Thus the master's prohibition against weeding out the zizania before the harvest.

In verses 36-43 Jesus explains the parable. Jesus is teaching that during the Church Age, wherever the good seed of God's Word is sown, Satan is right there sowing counterfeit seed. When is the time of the harvest?

Today, I want to give you some practical steps that will help you tame your tongue. The stakes are high. Your words can either bring life, or they can bring death. Listen to what is written in James 1:19, 26: "...Take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry...if anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight reign on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless."

Midway through the 7 year Tribulation, the Antichrist will achieve his ultimate goal of world domination. 3 1/2 years into the 7 year treaty which he will sign with the nation of Israel, the Antichrist will violate the security treaty, invade Israel, Jerusalem and the Jewish temple (Dan. 9:27). He will seat himself in the temple and declare himself god (2 Thess. 2:4). A second entity, the second beast of Revelation 13, the False Prophet, will command an image of the Antichrist be fashioned and set up in the temple (Matt. 24:15; Rev. 13:14). Empowered to animate the image, the False Prophet will coerce mankind to worship the image; those refusing will be killed (Rev. 13:15). The False Prophet will also inaugurate operation "Mark" requiring citizens of the world to take the mark of the beast (Antichrist) on their right hand or forehead as an act of worship. Those refusing will be barred from buying or selling (Rev.13:16-18). In his drive to be worshipped exclusively, the Antichrist and False Prophet will undoubtedly ban all religions and suppress the teaching of all sacred texts; especially the preaching of the Word of God.

Revelation 14 contains three sections each of which begins with the phrase kai eidon (then I looked, 14:1; then I saw, 14:6; then I looked, 14:14). This study is of the second section (14:6-13) which contains three angelic pronouncements and an affirmation of the Holy Spirit. These pronouncements will be made mid-tribulation; the time at which the Antichrist will achieve world domination. Supported by the False Prophet, he will declare himself god and demand the world worship him. His image will be set up in the Temple; those refusing to worship it will be killed (13:15). The worldwide campaign of "the mark" will force people to worship; without the mark, one will not be able to buy food (13:16-17). Jews and Jesus followers will be hunted, imprisoned and many murdered.

As this nightmare begins to unfold, God will send angelic preachers to warn the world's people not to worship the beast nor take his mark, but to worship the one true God. It will be yet another manifestation of God’s love and grace. The first angelic preacher will warn the citizens of the earth to worship the true God because His judgment is imminent.

Picture two groups of people discussing evangelism. One knows all the techniques, but never does it. The other group is actively sharing their faith daily. Whose discussion is going to be more vibrant and energized? Today we will view a passage that contrasts a mature or vibrant faith versus an immature or dead faith. This passage does not contrast a real versus a false faith like many of you may have been taught. So let's look at what James does say...
