The promised rescuer has arrived! The son of Eve, the son of Abraham, the son of David, and most incredibly, and unbelievably, the Son of God. The silence of the last 400 years has been shattered with the proclamation that not only is God speaking again, but He has actually come in the flesh to be with His most precious creation again, and to rescue them once and for all. But how was this going to happen? Jews are under the brutal control of the Roman empire. How will this rescuer overthrow this major world power? How will he set his people free? In this section we will see the themes of God, Man, Sin, Christ, and Faith.

Last week we were working through the times of the Judges, Prophets, and Kings. This took us from the book of Judges, all the way to the end of the Old Testament. During the span of those years, the Israelites seemed to be on an endless cycle of self destruction. Forgetting their Creator and Savior, they would drift from the truth and into the worship of false gods. In divine discipline, God would give them over to this way of life, which would always lead to horrible destruction. Foreign nations would harass and battle with them. This would often end in their capture and enslavement, where they were drug off to faraway lands. Their situation would become desperate, and then their leaders would remember who they were. Finally, they would cry out to God once more. Ture to his character, God would answer and raise up a leader. He would RESCUE them and return them to the land of promise.

Forty years have passed since God delivered the Israelites out of the clutches of Pharaoh. The exodus generation, those who had seen the many signs and wonders of the Lord, now had died off. Even their great leader, Moses, had given over to the curse of death. A man named, Joshua was appointed by God to lead the Israelites into the land of promise. Joshua was a commander, and God commissioned him to sweep across the new land and drive out the wicked tribes who lived there. The Israelites were to completely remove their presence from the land.

The law has been given. God has established in very clear terms what He expects from His chosen people. These 613 laws govern how Israel is supposed to behave toward God, toward one another, and even toward animals and other creation. God gives these laws and expects Israel to follow them, yet God knows that they will fail regularly, so He includes laws for that, or more precisely, He formalizes the sacrifice system. This is a way that the Israelites can show that they understand they have failed to obey the law (sinned) and express remorse, as well as have their sins covered through the death of an innocent animal. As we saw in the last lesson, this system anticipated something greater, something that would be able to completely repair the broken relationship with God. Somehow, the promised rescuer would repair this brokenness once and for all. Now the people will be led around the wilderness as God prepares and tests His people, and reveals the condition of their hearts.

The crashing waters of the Red Sea have settled. The nation of Israel, about 2 million people, look on in unbelief and awe as the God who led them out of slavery just destroyed the entire Egyptian army. They are now a completely free people! As the last line of their magnificent rescue song rings out, "The Lord will reign forever and ever" (Ex. 15:18). We can imagine the promises to Abraham, so many hundreds of years before, now echo anew in their hearts and minds. They will be made a great nation, they will receive a beautiful land of promise, and they will be used by God to bless the whole earth. But they are not at that promised land yet, and God has some work to do with them before they will be ready to enter it. God is going to establish a new covenant with them, the Mosaic Covenant. It will be defined by the giving of the Law to the people. In this section we see the themes of God, Man, Sin, Death, and Faith.

God had communicated to Moses that they were not to leave Egypt as paupers. They would leave as a wealthy nation. Moses told the Israelites to ask the Egyptians for their riches. Wanting to avoid further calamity, the Egyptian people unloaded their wealth into the bags of the Israelites. The progression of the plagues had led them to a place where they feared for their own lives. The possibility that they could all be wiped out was heavy on their thoughts. So consequently, they gave the Israelites everything they asked.

Response Reveals Belief. God reveals Himself to mankind and mankind is given a season of choice. A time to choose to respond in belief, or to not. It is God who then closes the door on man's season of choice. Pharaoh is a perfect example of this. God revealed Himself to Pharaoh through a series of signs and wonders, but Pharaoh hardened his heart against God and refused to listen. His response revealed his unbelief. God then closed the door on Pharaoh's season of choice. God hardened Pharaoh's heart, and God used Pharaoh to punish the Egyptians who believed in him as a god. The Israelites on the other hand responded in a way that revealed their belief.

As we continue our story we come to a section today that gives us insight into how God rescues. In the same way that the korot is a salvation from starvation for those living on Barangonan, the ark that God provided was a salvation to Noah, and his family. The themes that are woven through the fabric of this part of the story are God, Man, Sin, Death, Christ, and Faith.

Man and woman have disregarded God’s one command. They have been caught in their disobedience and called to stand in front of their loving creator, and in the place where love and joy and desire once was, is now fear and shame and deception. Everything was perfect, now, it couldn't be worse. They knew that God had promised that "they would surely die", now they are about to find out what this "death" or "separation" is all about, and just how far the impact of their sin will reach. Yet, even as God gives them a glimpse of the hardships they are now going to face, He has hidden within these “curses" a Hope that the rest of this story hinges upon, and this Hope will begin to answer the question, "what is God’s going to do now?"
