The book of Romans is one of the most powerful and influential books ever written. Augustine, one of the most brilliant theologians of the early church, came to faith after reading Romans chapter thirteen. Martin Luther recovered the doctrine of salvation by faith from his study of Romans 1:17 and went on to lead the Protestant Reformation. While listening to the preface of Luther’s commentary on Romans, John Wesley felt his heart "strangely warmed" and he was saved. John Wesley and his brother Charles were used mightily by God in both England and the United States to bring revival in the eighteenth century. The great Puritan preacher, John Bunyan, was so inspired by Romans that he wrote the immortal Pilgrim’s Progress.

Our horizon includes the Rapture, the Kingdom, the Crushing of Satan and, as we will study today, Paradise Restored. The horizon for people separated from God is, however, horribly different. Many people in our society believe there will be some type of judgment in the afterlife. Mistakenly, they believe this judgment will determine who goes to heaven and who goes to hell. The Bible reveals three judgments none of which determine who goes to heaven and who goes to hell. One’s eternal destiny is determined in this life by one's response to Jesus Christ.

Jesus will fulfill His promises through an event called the Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). At the Rapture, the souls of deceased believers will be united with their resurrection bodies. Believers alive at the time of the Rapture will be changed and then caught up to meet the Lord after the resurrection of deceased believers. We don’t know the day or hour of the Rapture. But we do know it happens before Jesus returns.

As we continue God’s Story of Hope Jesus will reveal something that will not make sense to His disciples. But in the end they will see Jesus was right. We pick up the story early on a Sunday morning in April 33AD.

Now that Judas is out of the room and into the night, Jesus concludes the last Passover feast in a very intimate way. Speaking dearly to the eleven, He institutes a new type of remembrance. Jesus picks up a cup of wine and some bread. This cup is the third cup of wine that is drunk during the Passover meal. It comes after the main course. It is called The Cup of Redemption. In the Jewish Passover it was symbolic of the blood of the lamb that was sacrificed at the first Passover in Egypt.

Last week we ended with Jesus and his disciples in the town of Bethany. Jesus had just called out a dead man from his grave. The countryside was ablaze with the news, and since Bethany is less than two miles from Jerusalem, the leaders of Israel heard the news quickly. Throughout the last few years, Jesus had not only claimed to be God, but had systematically demonstrated control and authority over all areas of life. It was an authority and control that only God could possess. Wind and waves recognized His voice. Demons trembled in fear and followed His instruction. He healed sickness and disease as simply as if he were ordering food from a restaurant. Lazarus was the final straw. Bringing a man back to life, Jesus had control over life itself.

It is pretty easy to make an incredible claim. Many people do it all time. From Muhammad Ali's "I am the greatest" speech, to the friend who somehow always has that lower golf score when he’s not with you. It is not difficult to make these claims, the real challenge comes when a person is called on to prove it. Are they able to backup their claims? We will see in this section that Jesus may take the cake when it comes to incredible claims, but he doesnt leave their validity up in the air, he gave plenty of proof.

Life is full of the unexpected. Sometimes positive and sometimes negative. If you think back just this week you can probably identify some of both. Our story in this section will be no exception. Jesus has been baptized, overcome the temptation of Lucifer in the wilderness and has been proclaimed the Son of God and the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. What a beginning to this rescue story! But, as readers and hearers of this Story of Hope, there's one thing we know for sure, this Rescuer is not following anyone's expectations except His Father's. There is a rescue plan unfolding, so what will the next pages reveal about this plan and this Rescuer?
